100,000 Protest in Tel Aviv against Immunity Bills for Netanyahu

100,000 Protest in Tel Aviv against Immunity Bills for Netanyahu

A hundred thousand Israelis protested on Saturday night, May 25, proposed legislation that would grant Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immunity from prosecution on a series of corruption charges. The protesters outside the Tel Aviv Museum of Art on called for protecting Israel’s democratic sphere against far-right government overreach.

The demonstrators rallied against legislation being pushed by Netanyahu’s incoming coalition to shield him from criminal prosecution as well as restricting the power of the Supreme Court.

Speakers at the protest included Kahol Lavan chairman MK Benny Gantz, Kahol Lavan co-chairman MK Yair Lapid, Kahol Lavan MK Moshe Ya’alon, Hadash Chairman Ayman Odeh, Labor chairman MK Avi Gabbay, Meretz’s chairwomen MK Tamar Zandberg, Kahol Lavan’s MK Ofer Shelah, retired Arab-Druze general Amal Assad and attorney Sagit Peretz Deri.

MK Odeh told the gathered masses that efforts to safeguard Israeli democracy amid brewing initiatives by the incoming coalition to grant Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immunity from prosecution would only be possible when Jewish and Arab citizens work and struggle together. Addressing the crowd, Odeh said, “I am here today because I believe that Jewish-Arab partnership is the only way to achieve hope and change.” “Arab citizens alone cannot enact change, but without us it is impossible,” the Hadash MK continued. “I am here today because I believe that without equality there is no democracy.”

Odeh was a last-minute addition to the Saturday evening lineup of speakers after a phone call hours earlier with Gantz, whose party was the primary organizer of the rally.
On Friday, Haaretz reported that after Odeh accepted a formal invitation to address demonstrators last week, he was told that “the list of speakers was already closed and there was no room for additional ones.”

The organizers of the protest, which bills itself as a pro-democracy rally, included all Jewish opposition parties – Kahol Lavan, Labor and Meretz – but not Hadash and the Arab parties. The rally was the first time since the April 9 election that Israel’s opposition parties joined forces.

After significant criticism that no Arab was included in the rally, Gantz called Odeh several hours before it was to begin and asked him to address the demonstrators. “The struggle against Netanyahu’s attempts to destroy the democratic space is a joint struggle that all democratic forces share,” Odeh wrote in a post on his official Twitter handle.
“We won’t have an alternative for a corrupt and destructive regime without broad cooperation by all citizens, Jews and Arabs. Only thus will we be able to replace the regime, only thus will we be able to pose an alternative to his destructive policy.”

Meretz chairwoman Zandberg tweeted that “there is no democracy without equality and the struggle for democracy cannot be for Jews only.” She added “all opposition members will be on stage tonight.” Labor’s MK Shelly Yacimovich tweeted that “a protest without Arabs is surrender to racism and to the incitement from the right.”

Hadash and Israeli peace organizations said Wednesday they would hold demonstrations in Tel Aviv to support Palestine's bid to upgrade its status at the UN. Another rally was held in Nazareth by Israeli and Palestinian women organizations.

A coalition of Hadash and Israeli peace organizations said in a statement they would rally on Rothschild Blvd. in Tel Aviv on Thursday ahead of the vote in the General Assembly. "We are citizens in the state of Israel, and we support the UN bid," the statement said.

"We support Palestinian non-member status at the United Nations which will help both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. The continuous conflict between two people has killed thousands of children, women, and innocent people," the statement said.

The Coalition Against Racism: Upper Nazareth Mayor should be indicted for racist statements

23 november 2012, The Israeli Communist Party http://www. maki.org.il המפלגה הקומוניסטית הישראלית  الحزب الشيوعي الاسرائيلي (Israel)

Activists from the Coalition Against Racism in Israel demanded that Upper Nazareth Mayor Shimon Gafsou should be "indicted for racist statements" after he sent a letter to Interior Minister Eli Yishai claiming that Nazareth is full of "Israel-hating residents whose place is in Gaza and not here." Mayor of Jewish-Arab Upper Nazareth claims Arab-majority Nazareth is becoming "a nest of terror in the heart of the Galilee, a center for the spread of hatred of Israel that supports and backs every anti-Israel initiative."

Gafsou accuses Nazareth mayor Ramez Jeraysi, a leading member of the Hadash (the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality – Communist Party of Israel), of walking at the head a rally which protested deadly Operation Pillar of Defense. "Our boys are fighting in Gaza and the mayor of Nazareth, who is a member of Hadash, supports the terror group," he said. "This is a grave matter." Gafsou said that the present government in Nazareth is a "fifth column" and that the entire city is turning into "a hotbed of terror within Israel, a center for distributing hatred of Israel that supports and backs any anti-Israel group."

A protest was held by Hadash on Saturday, November 17, 2012, in Nazareth where Hadash leader MK Mohammed Barake said "I accuse the Israeli government for the spilling of both Israeli and Palestinian blood, and I mourn victims on both sides. Civilians must be pulled from the cycle of horror. [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu is mistaken if he thinks the [Gaza] operation will bring quiet. This will not happen." 1500 participants took part in the Nazareth rally, both Jews and Arabs.

Hadash calls on public to end deadly operation in Gaza

16 november 2012/The Israeli Communist Party http://www. maki.org.il המפלגה הקומוניסטית הישראלית الحزب الشيوعي الاسرائيلي (Israel)

Demonstrations against the Israeli deadly military operation in Gaza were held in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem on Thursday night by Hadash (The Democratic Front for Peace and Equality – Communist Party of Israel). Also, Arab and Jewish students, Hadash members, took part in demonstrations held at Haifa University, Tel-Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Thursday afternoon.
Activists all over the country chanted slogan such as "Arabs and Jews refuse to be enemies," "in Gaza and Sderot, little girls want to live," and "Bibi [Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu] and [Defense minister Ehud] Barak, war is not a game." Hadash called on the public to join in demonstrations throughout the country in opposition to Operation Pillar of Defense in Gaza.

Hadash MK Dov Khenin participated in the Tel-Aviv demonstration, near the Likud headquarters and stated: "Stop the killing, stop the bloodshed immediately." He added: "One bombing leads to another, leading to more and more people being injured in Gaza and Israel."

"The cycle of violence is not the solution but the problem," he added. Khenin called on the government to reach an immediate cease-fire and announce the opening of genuine negotiations and an agreement with the Palestinians. At the rally in Tel Aviv, Hadash chairman, MK Muhammad Barake said Jews and Arabs together were calling for an end to the violence. "We came here to say that wars do not solve the conflict, only serve to add more bloodshed. We hope to hear the nation cry out against the right-wing government," Barake said.
Hundreds attended the antiwar protest on King George Street in Tel Aviv, which was interrupted when an air raid siren was sounded in the city for the first time since 1991 during the First Gulf War. Two explosions were heard following the siren, an hour after a rocket from the Gaza Strip exploded in an open area outside Rishon Lezion. There were no reports of injuries in either strike. In Jerusalem police arrested five activists in the demonstration held near the Prime Minister's house.
The Arab Higher Monitoring Committee said in a statement published on Thursday, "We oppose the attack on Gaza and the assassination of Palestinian people and leaders. Palestinian blood is more precious than the bloodshed the fascists are taking advantage of for publicity ahead of the Knesset elections. If the Israeli government thinks that this is the way to provide the settlers in the south with security, they are wrong. The Israeli government must take full responsibility for the people being killed on both sides – the Palestinian and the Israeli. The ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories is the main reason for everything that is happening here today."

Hadash: the coming elections are about fighting for equality, social justice and a just peace

26 october 2012, The Israeli Communist Party http://www.maki.org.il (Israel) (Israel)

Neo-liberal and right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and fascist Foreign Minister Ivette (Avigdor) Liberman have agreed to join forces for a general election in the new year. Netanyahu and Liberman said Thursday they will present a joint list for the January 22 election without merging their respective parties, Likud and Yisrael Beitenu. Foreign Minister Liberman calls for expelling, by means of a land swap, hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens simply for being Arab. He ran an election campaign highlighted by the slogan, "Only Lieberman understands Arabic." He was a member of Kach in the late 1970s, which he understandably denies but which Kach veterans from that era swear to. He’s fantasized aloud in the Knesset about executing Arab MKs and threatened to bomb Egypt’s Aswan Dam. He has been under Israel Police investigation for corruption for nearly 15 years, and could face indictment pretty soon.

Thursday’s union between the Likud and Yisrael Beytenu parties has resulted in a tie between the rightist and the centrist-leftist blocs, a preliminary poll released after the announcement found. The centrist-left, however, includes Hadash (Democratic Front for Peace and Equality – Communist Party of Israel) and two Arab parties. Hadash leader Dov Khenin said that a Netanyahu-Liberman government, would open three war fronts: "One on Iran, a second against the Arab-Palestinians in Israel and another on democracy." Therefore, Khenin continued, "the coming elections are about fighting for equality, social justice and against the occupation and for a just peace with the Palestinian people."

New Military Order comes into effect

29 August 2012, Defence for Children International - Palestine Section http://www.dci-palestine.org (Palestine)
newsletter@dci-palestine.org
On 1 August, Military Order 1685  came into effect. The new order reduces the time within which children  detained by the Israeli military must be brought before a military court  judge for the first time. The order shortens the time from eight to four  days. This amendment applies to adults and children as young as 12 years. The  amendment does not automatically apply in cases where a person is being  interrogated by the Israeli Security Agency (ISA or Shin Bet).

Some key points to note regarding these changes are as  follows:
Military Order 1685 has not been translated into Arabic as is required  under Article 65 of the Fourth  Geneva Convention, and accordingly has no legal effect. Previous military  orders relating to the establishment of a military juvenile court (2009) and  the age of majority (2011) have yet to be translated into  Arabic.

No explanation has been given as to why more favourable time limits apply  to Israeli children, including children living in settlements in the West  Bank. Under the law that is applied to Israeli children, a child below the  age of 14 must be brought before a civilian judge within 12 hours of arrest,  rising to 24 hours in the case of older children. Under international law, no  state is entitled to discriminate between  those over whom it exercises penal jurisdiction on the basis of their race of  nationality.
The critical period for children detained under Israeli military law is  during the first 48 hours after arrest. It is during this period that most  cases of abuse  are documented and the child is interrogated without the benefit of legal  advice or the presence of a parent – rights Israeli children enjoy. The  amendment which now requires children be brought before a military court  judge within 96 hours of arrest adds no additional protection.

DCI-Palestine continues to recommend that:
The Israeli government desists from applying discriminatory legal systems  to children based on race or nationality.

On arrival at a place of detention, children should be immediately  reminded of their right to silence. Their right to consult a lawyer prior to  interrogation should be respected.
Children should have a parent or guardian present prior to and during  their interrogation.

Interrogations should be audio-visually recorded and the tapes should be  made available to the child’s lawyer.
Breach of these recommendations should result in the discontinuation of  the prosecution and the child’s release.

MK Khenin: Palestinians and Israelis are paying greatly because the occupation

29 August 2012, The Israeli Communist Party המפלגה הקומוניסטית הישראלית الحزب الشيوعي الاسرائيلي (Israel)
info@maki.org.il
Social activists joined OneVoice Israel on Tuesday in Tel Aviv to draw the inextricable link between calls for social justice and demands for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to end occupation.
Hundreds congregated in Rothschild Boulevard around a massive ice wall, symbolizing the "freeze" in peace talks and containing posters with information on dozens of under-funded social programs in Israel, while the government bleeds money toward conflict management over resolution. "In life there is no status quo, if you don't move forward you go backwards," said MK Dov Khenin (Hadash). "The government of Netanyahu speaks of two states, but acts on a daily basis to make this solution harder. The price? It's not only for the Palestinians, we too are paying greatly."

The ice wall on Rothschild Boulevard (Photo: OneVoice)
"Our social needs are being frozen along with the peace process," said Tal Harris OneVoice Israel executive director. "People forgot over the last 20 years that the peace process impacts their day-to-day life. We want to remind them of the need to freeze settlements and end the conflict once and for all by committing to serious negotiations." The government's defense budget ballooned to $14.5 billion in 2012, much of it to maintain the occupation, while education and health suffer serious deficits. Israeli taxpayers have so far bankrolled the occupation and settlement of Palestinian land to the tune of $50 billion while struggling to make ends meet.
Singers Noa (Achinoam Nini) and Mira Awad, MKs Khenin, Avishay Braverman, Nitzan Horowitz, Akram Hasoon and Raleb Majadele, and former Ambassadors Ilan Baruch, Alon Liel and Daniel Shek, among others, participated in the event.
OneVoice is an international grassroots movement that aims to "amplify the voice of Israeli and Palestinian moderates, empowering them to demand a two-state solution. The movement educates and trains Israeli and Palestinian youth in leadership skills, non-violent activism, and democratic principles."
